New Orleans on Monday released tight end Jeremy Shockey, who scored a fourth-quarter touchdown that gave the Saints the lead for good in their 2010 Super Bowl victory against Indianapolis.
The Saints acquired Shockey from the New York Giants before the 2008 season. In three seasons in New Orleans, he caught 139 passes for 1,460 yards with six touchdowns in 38 regular-season games. Shockey, 30, had 41 receptions for 408 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games last season. His reception and yardage numbers were the lowest in his nine-year career.
"Jeremy played an important role in helping our team bring a Super Bowl championship to New Orleans," coach Sean Payton said in a statement. "We're appreciative of his efforts."
